  • Gen Z Starts Moving From WhatsApp to Telegram: Why Young Users Are Changing the Way They Chat

For years, WhatsApp has been one of the most important communication apps for young people. From chatting with friends and family to school groups, work conversations, online shopping, and community discussions, the platform has become deeply integrated into everyday life. But messaging habits are changing. Telegram is gaining more attention among younger users who want different ways to communicate, discover communities, share content, and manage their online conversations. In Indonesia, recent Jakpat data shows that 89% of Gen Z respondents had used WhatsApp during the previous six months, while 41% had used Telegram. This means WhatsApp is still clearly ahead, but Telegram has established itself as a significant alternative. So, the story is not necessarily that Gen Z is completely abandoning WhatsApp. Instead, many young users are becoming multi-platform communicators, choosing different apps for different purposes. Telegram Offers More Than Traditional Messaging One of Telegram's biggest attractions is that it doesn't feel limited to traditional one-to-one messaging. Telegram combines private chats with large groups, public channels, content sharing, and other community-oriented features. This makes the platform particularly useful for people who want to follow specific interests or participate in communities rather than simply communicate with people already in their contact list. For Gen Z, that difference can be important. Instead of using an app only to ask a friend, "Where are you?", users can also use Telegram to follow communities, receive updates, exchange files, discover content, and communicate with large groups. This gives Telegram a different role in the digital ecosystem. 1. Gen Z Wants More Flexible Online Communities Gen Z has grown up in an internet environment where online communities are just as important as traditional social circles. Gaming communities, entertainment fandoms, education groups, creator communities, cryptocurrency discussions, hobbies, and local interest groups can all exist online. Telegram's channels and large-group functionality make it attractive for these types of communities. Rather than simply connecting with people they already know, users can join conversations based on their interests. That changes messaging from simply "talking to friends" into "being part of a digital community." 2. Privacy Is Becoming More Important Privacy is another reason messaging platforms are being scrutinized more closely. Young users are increasingly aware that their digital activities can generate data and that technology companies are constantly adding new features to their platforms. Some WhatsApp users have expressed concerns about Meta's growing integration of AI and other features, with some online users saying this has encouraged them to explore alternatives such as Telegram and Signal. However, it is important not to assume that Telegram automatically means complete privacy or anonymity. Telegram has its own privacy model, and users should understand the difference between its various chat types and third-party services. In fact, recent academic research has raised privacy and security concerns surrounding Telegram's growing Mini App ecosystem. For Gen Z, the bigger trend may therefore be greater awareness and choice, rather than simply choosing one platform because it is considered "private." 3. Bigger Communities Can Change How People Communicate WhatsApp is traditionally associated with personal conversations and smaller group chats. Telegram, meanwhile, has developed a strong reputation for large communities and broadcast-style channels. That makes it useful for creators, organizations, fan communities, news groups, educators, and online communities that want to communicate with large audiences. For younger users who already spend significant amounts of time in digital communities, this can make Telegram feel more like a combination of messaging app and community platform. 4. Gen Z Is Comfortable Using Multiple Apps Perhaps the most important reason isn't actually WhatsApp or Telegram. It's Gen Z's willingness to use multiple platforms simultaneously. A young person might use Instagram to discover content, TikTok for entertainment, WhatsApp to communicate with family, Discord for gaming, and Telegram for specific communities. This means a platform doesn't necessarily have to replace another platform to become successful. Telegram can grow without WhatsApp disappearing. Recent Indonesian data supports this idea. While WhatsApp remains the most-used messaging platform among Gen Z, Telegram's 41% usage rate demonstrates that a substantial portion of young users already uses both ecosystems. 5. The Definition of "Chatting" Is Changing Traditional messaging was relatively simple: Send a message → receive a message → reply. Today's digital communication is much broader. People expect messaging platforms to support communities, media, files, content discovery, group conversations, bots, channels, and other digital activities. This is part of a broader change in how Gen Z communicates online. Interestingly, the latest trend may be moving beyond both WhatsApp and Telegram. Recent reporting from Indonesia highlights emerging messaging platforms such as Carrier Pidge and Roost, which are designed around slower communication and less pressure to respond instantly. That suggests the real story may not be "Gen Z is moving from WhatsApp to Telegram." Is WhatsApp Losing Gen Z? Not exactly. At least based on available Indonesian data, WhatsApp remains the dominant messaging platform among Gen Z. A 2026 Jakpat survey found that 89% of respondents had used WhatsApp in the previous six months, compared with 41% for Telegram. Older Indonesian Gen Z research also showed WhatsApp's enormous lead, with 92% of respondents reporting WhatsApp use compared with only 2% for Telegram. The difference between the older and newer figures is notable, but it should not automatically be interpreted as a mass migration. Survey methodologies and samples differ, and the latest figures still show WhatsApp firmly in first place. Instead, Telegram appears to be becoming a secondary communication space for many young users. What Does This Mean for the Future of Messaging? The future may not belong to one messaging app. Instead, users could increasingly maintain several digital communication spaces, with each platform serving a different purpose. WhatsApp may remain the everyday communication tool for family, friends, businesses, and established social networks. Telegram can serve communities, channels, content sharing, and interest-based communication. And newer platforms may attract users who want something completely different, such as slower conversations and less pressure to respond immediately. This reflects a bigger shift in Gen Z's relationship with technology: young users don't necessarily want one platform to do everything. They want platforms that match specific moods, communities, relationships, and communication styles. The Bottom Line The idea that Gen Z is abandoning WhatsApp for Telegram is more dramatic than the current evidence suggests. WhatsApp remains the leading messaging platform among Indonesian Gen Z, but Telegram has grown into a meaningful alternative. The more interesting trend is that Gen Z is becoming increasingly comfortable choosing where, how, and with whom they communicate. Telegram's community features, flexibility, and broader communication ecosystem give young users another option. Meanwhile, the emergence of even newer messaging platforms suggests that the next generation of chat apps could focus less on instant replies and more on personalized digital experiences. For Gen Z, the future of messaging may not be about leaving WhatsApp behind. It may be about having more choices than ever before.
